Why You Need a Social Media Audit (and How to do One)

It’s the start of a new year, which is the perfect time to change or improve your social media presence. Doing a social media audit is a great way to kick things off and will help you to figure out what’s working, what’s not, and what can be improved.

I know, I know, most people recoil at the thought of any kind of audit – but when it comes to managing your social media, it’s crucial. Good social media managers are constantly reviewing their profiles, revising their strategy, and making sure their audience is getting what they want.

Ok, so what exactly is a social media audit?

It’s a complete review of every social media channel you have. You’ll go through our Social Media Audit to make sure everything looks great, is up to date, and working as you intended. It covers things like:

  • Profile pictures and cover photos. Are they consistent across your channels? Are they compelling, relevant, and engaging?
  • What you’re posting. Is the content interesting? Does it properly represent your brand? How often are you posting and is it enough?
  • Your business details. Is everything up to date? Are you easy to find?
  • Engagement. What posts do people engage with the most? What isn’t as popular as you expected?
  • Strategy and goals. Are you meeting your goals? Do your social media channels align with what you outlined in your social media strategy?

How often should I do a social media audit?

At Altitude Media, we do a quick audit once every month. That might seem like a lot, but don’t fret – you will quickly get into a rhythm and our downloadable audit (we’ll get to that in a bit) means you will whiz through it in no time at all.

And how exactly do I do a social media audit?

First thing’s first – download our Social Media Audit and bring it up on your computer. If you like the feel of a pen in your hand, you can also print it off. Then just go through it. It’s that simple.

This exercise works best if you have a social media strategy with clearly defined goals. It means you can look through your channels and think, “Is the way I am using social media on a day-to-day basis in line with my business objectives?”

When we start working on a client’s social media strategy, we ask them to write down their top three target audiences, and their top three objectives for social media.
